A Sustainable Investment in the Future
Westwerk Leipzig is setting an example for sustainable real estate development: a new green roof has been installed on the site. Greening the roof not only creates additional ecological value, but also makes an important contribution to a more sustainable and climate-resilient urban district.
The project was funded by the Sächsische Aufbaubank – Förderbank (SAB) with the support of EU funding.
More Green for Leipzig
Roof areas offer significant potential for additional greenery, particularly in densely built-up inner-city areas. The new green roof makes use of this potential at Westwerk.
The vegetation provides habitat for plants and insects and helps increase biodiversity in the urban environment. At the same time, a green roof can retain rainwater and release it back into the surrounding environment with a delay. This can help relieve drainage systems, particularly during heavy rainfall events.
Contributing to a Better Urban Climate
Green roofs also contribute to improving the local microclimate. Plants release moisture through evaporation, which can help cool their immediate surroundings. This is becoming increasingly important in cities where sealed surfaces and high building densities can contribute to rising temperatures.
In addition, the vegetation protects the underlying roof membrane from weather-related influences and can therefore help extend the lifespan of the roof structure.
Sustainable Development of Westwerk
The implementation of the green roof is part of our commitment to developing Westwerk Leipzig responsibly and sustainably over the long term. This is not only about the economic use and preservation of the historic property, but also about placing greater emphasis on ecological aspects in the further development of the site.
Funding from the Sächsische Aufbaubank and the EU funding provided support in implementing sustainable investments at the site and making a concrete contribution to the climate- and environmentally responsible development of Leipzig.
A Visible Sign of Sustainable Real Estate Development
With the new green roof, Westwerk combines economic responsibility with ecological sustainability. A previously largely unused roof area is being transformed into additional green space – right in the heart of Leipzig.
We are pleased that this project represents another step towards the future-oriented and sustainable development of Westwerk.
