Leipzig, June 2025 — The Travelling Art Gallery is pleased to announce the arrival of two internationally acclaimed South African artists, Fadiel Hermans and Claude Chandler, in Leipzig. As part of a four-week Artist-in-Residence programme, the two artists will have the opportunity to live and work in the creative atmosphere of the city of Leipzig.
This special project has been made possible through the generous support of Corpure, Leipzig/Munich, as well as the Century City Conference Centre in Cape Town.
The residency programme takes place at Westwerk, a former industrial complex in the heart of Leipzig that has evolved into a vibrant centre for contemporary art, creative studios and alternative retail concepts. As the owner of Westwerk, Corpure plays a key role in the ongoing development of this cultural hub.
The artists’ stay is also supported by the Century City Conference Centre, located just ten minutes from the centre of Cape Town. The Conference Centre is one of the most committed supporters of South African art and currently houses the largest collection of works by Fadiel Hermans.
During their stay, Fadiel Hermans and Claude Chandler will work in a studio at Westwerk, draw inspiration from Leipzig’s vibrant art scene and create new works that will further strengthen the creative dialogue between South Africa and Germany.
“We are delighted that Fadiel and Claude have the opportunity to spend four weeks in Leipzig and to develop their artistic practice here,” says Barbara Lenhard, spokesperson for the artists’ initiative The Travelling Art Gallery. “Thanks to the support of Westwerk and Gary Koetser, CEO of the Century City Conference Centre, this programme and their time in Germany will undoubtedly enrich their artistic development and provide them with new visibility in the international art community,” adds Florian Gast, curator and project manager.
The Artist-in-Residence programme is part of The Travelling Art Gallery’s mission to connect South African artists internationally and to promote cultural exchange across borders.
