With the construction of the new Kunsthaus (Remise) in immediate proximity to the Westwerk Leipzig, Corpure GmbH & Co. KG closes an urban gap while simultaneously creating a new, identity-forming space for art and the public.
The building was erected on the site of a former remise within the historic industrial complex dating back to the 19th century.
The design was developed by Munich-based architects Thomas Esmyol and Christina Kopmann and combines contemporary architecture with the industrial character of the site. The aim was to further develop the unique spirit of the Westwerk without displacing its history. As a result, the new building integrates charismatically between the industrial structures from the second half of the 19th century and the adjacent Gründerzeit residential buildings.
A striking design feature of the building is the large green spiral staircase, which prominently shapes the exterior appearance and gives the Kunsthaus a high level of recognisability. It symbolises openness, movement, and the vertical connection of the various uses within the building.
The construction phase of the Kunsthaus spanned from 2022 to 2023. Following a staffing bottleneck, Corpure additionally assumed responsibility for construction management, overseeing the project through to its final completion. During planning and implementation, Corpure was supported by makena plangrafik GbR, who have accompanied the Westwerk on various projects in the past. The Kunsthaus complements the Westwerk’s unique mix of uses, including art, gastronomy, markets, freelancers, crafts, music, sports, and associations.
It strengthens Leipzig-Plagwitz as a creative hub and provides space for contemporary exhibitions, encounters, and cultural exchange.
We are delighted to welcome the galleries SKM and Akantus, as well as the wine bar Stappo, as tenants in this exceptional building.
